The area of specialization a therapist aligns with often reflects an impactful aspect of that individual’s lived experience. I could tell you that my interest in illness, dying, and death emerged from my own confrontation with cancer, but I have always found meaning in the differing ways in which we navigate life-altering situations—any such instance that bring’s one mortality into stark conscious focus. While many people (and even some therapists) shy away from exploring these subjects, I am drawn toward them. But, most importantly, this specific area of examination lends access to a very powerful catalyst; one that affords a unique opportunity to add depth and dimension to an individual’s experience of living. Whether through illness, grief, or loss, when we face our own mortality, the lens through which we evaluate our life allows for a transformation of judgment and understanding, as our capacity for meaning expands into new territory.
